ERC067 Scarlatti Les Sonates performed by Marcelle Meyer

The extraordinary talent of French pianist Marcelle Meyer is a truly priceless gift to any listener. Her flawless technique not only masters the most challenging of compositions, but does so with an otherworldly sense of ease and clarity. This 1954 recording of the glorious Scarlatti is no exception to Meyers ability to breathe new life into any work she touched.

Moving in Parisian social circles of the most influential and innovative musicians, composers and artists of the 20th century, Meyer was coached by Debussy in the final year of his life and featured prominently as the muse-like focal point in the 1922 Jacques-Émile Blanche painting of the group Les Six

Perhaps her enthusiasm for performing more obscure music contributed to her name gaining less notoriety than her male peers, but as new waves of listeners discover Meyer, recognition of her genius is growing into the legacy she deserves.

Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) was greatly influential in the development of the Classical style and as an accomplished harpsichordist, his talents were often claimed to rival those of Handel. In 1733 Scarlatti went to Madrid to become the music master of the Princess Maria Barbara who later became the Queen of Spain, and it was during these years he composed the majority of the 555 keyboard sonatas for which he is most famous.
